Treachery in the Yard - A review

This story is set in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Detective Tamunoemi Peterside investigates a bombing at the residence of Pius Okpara, who is contesting for governor in the state primaries. No one was killed in the bombing but there is an attempt on the life of the only witness, a judge’s wife, that same night. Another attempt is successful and so starts a murder investigation.

Tammy suspects Okpara’s aide who he assumes is in cahoots with their political opponent, Dr. Puene, but the state chief of police orders him to drop the case because he’s wrong. Along the line, the reason to

Onaedo - The Blacksmith’s daughter

Onaedo - The Blacksmith’s daughter is the first novel by Ngozi Achebe. If you’re a fan of the style of Chinua Achebe, who happens to be Ngozi’s uncle, this book will not disappoint. The main story is that of Onaedo, a young teenager of Igbo ethnicity, in the time before the English colonialists made our geographic space a country called Nigeria. The novel is engaging and swift-paced but also manages to be serious and moving.

Synopsis from the publishers

Onaedo - The Blacksmith’s daughter is a work of fiction and the tale of two women separated by four hundred years of history.

Adimchinma Ibe - Treachery in the Yard

It is not everyday you find a Nigerian writer featured in the Wall Street Journal but that was what happened earlier this month. I was perusing the WSJ a couple of weeks ago and came across an excerpt of Adimchinma’s first novel, Treachery in the Yard, HERE. I was very excited and contacted him the next day through Facebook. It turns out that he lives in Nigeria, Enugu to be exact, and had gotten a contract with St Martin’s Press, an imprint of Macmillian, by dint of hardwork. I was

Abby - August

1. When and why did you begin writing?

Writing’s just one of my avenues of expression: I cannot readily put forth a date when I began writing but I can tell why. I love stories but I really do not do stories, or even poetry. Ironic that may sound. I classify my type of writing self-help. Oh I don’t preach the ‘do-it-right’ maxim but I believe in everyone taking charge and responsibility for their lives.

When and why did you begin writing?

I started writing about 2001. I met a girl while doing G. C E. in 1999 and another while doing WAEC in 2000. I had this huge crush on them. But no guts. Well, later in 2001 the guts came. Not guts to go look for the girls

Iphey will you marry me?

Chinedu picked Iphey up at seven after work on a Friday evening. Iphey wore black pants, a burgundy camisole and black short sleeved classy jacket. Today was special and so it deserved the special concern. It was three months since she had got together with Chinedu and everyday was a revelation of how good they were together. She smiled to herself as she went to the ladies and slipped on silver filigree earrings, slid on some gloss and did her eye makeup sprinkling loose powder sparsely on her face.

Chinedu waited for her downstairs and she traipsed down in her heels

The Lonely Maiden

She lies atop her downy pillows
Her eyes upon the high ceiling
But she does not see the cracks
Like those on the tortoiseshell
Crossing the face of the plaster
For her gaze is upon the unseen
And her thoughts lost in the mists
As she tries to bring up another
She fixes in chiseled features
In the beloved outline of a face
Her creation then takes on the form
Of one of the legends of old
Thor, Apollo, Arthur… or is it Zeus?
This evokes the sound of thunder
That bestirs her from her daze
She glances around the
